About Us
Achimota Centre for Children with Autism is the largest centre-based Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) program north of the Greater Toronto Area.
Intensive Behavioural Intervention is based on the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) which has been scientifically proven to be effective for children with autism.
Applied Behavioural Analysis, as defined by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, is a scientific approach that describes a method to change behaviour and measure the resulting change.
Our Centre has a variety of learning environments including individual therapy areas and rooms offering a school-like setting. We have a large bright gym area for gross motor activities and a snoezelen room for controlled multisensory stimulation.
We Offer:
- Session times run between 8:30 am and 4:15 pm
- Evening sessions (based on availability)
- Full-day or half day program
- Intensive Behavioural Intervention trained team of dedicated Instructional Therapists
- Individualized program implemented by Clinician and Senior Therapist
- Individualized program is overseen by Psychological Associate
- Instructional Therapists receive on-site and on-going supervision and professional training
- Individualized program can incorporate monthly on-site support from Speech Pathologist and Occupational Therapist
- Opportunities for social interactions facilitated by Instructional Therapists
- Opportunities for group instruction and classroom preparation
- Integration to community preschool programs
- Integration and transition to school
- Increased generalization of skills through ongoing staff rotation
- Increased independence through daily living skills
After School/Social Skills Program - The Achimota Centre also offers an After School/Social Skills Program. It is is a fun, safe and inclusive environment based on the principals of Applied Behavioural Analysis; small ratios with opportunities for social and cooperative interactions facilitated by our trained staff. The planned activities allow the children to be involved in a variety of social interactions with other children while working on such skills as turn taking, sharing, friendship, following directions, emotions and feelings. Our After School /Social Skills Program offers opportunities to develop appropriate life skills.
