PICKY EATERS – Ideas for managing eating problems of children with an ASD

Posted by Achimota Barrie

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Does the eating battle with your child include cajoling, airplane noises, dancing with spoons, lots of gagging, creative food presentations, threats of starvation, the “one bite” rule, crying, distractions of books, toys and TV…?  Do you wonder if your child is adequately nourished?  Do you struggle with the question of when or what nutrients to give your child?  Do you need strategies to deal with your child’s limited food choices or food refusal?  These will be some of the topics discussed by the Jane Anne Sullivan, RD, CDE., Dietitian from Royal Victoria Hospital and member of the Feeding Assessment and Consultation Service, Children’s Treatment Network of Simcoe York.

Jane Anne Sullivan has had a varied career in the field of dietetics for over the past 30 years and has specialized in pediatric nutrition for the last 14 years.  She has worked with children in both homecare, inpatient and outpatient settings.  Jane Anne currently works at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Barrie.  She is the consulting dietitian on the Feeding and Swallowing Team through the Children’s Treatment Network of Simcoe York as well as the managing pediatric inpatients and Pediatric Diabetes Clinic within RVH.

NEW REGISTERED DISABILITY SAVINGS PLAN (RDSP) SEMINAR

Posted by Achimota Barrie

Wednesday, November 04, 2009 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Achimota Centre for Children with Autism is pleased to offer a free seminar for families and the autism community regarding the new Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

Tammy Thompson-Kliewer has been employed in the financial services industry for over 7 years at the head office of one of Canada’s largest banks.  She is a training expert and a subject matter for credit card fraud detection.  She is also (and most importantly) the mother to an eight year old son with severe autism and a two year old daughter.

The government of Canada recently introduced a savings plan for people with a diagnosed disability.  According to Tammy Thompson-Kliewer, the program far outweighs any other savings plan currently in existence for parents looking to provide financially for their disabled children as they age.  Even if you can not afford to make large contributions, the program allows parents and caregivers at all income levels to save for their child.  Learn more about the RDSP program, both grants and investments, at this informal free seminar.

To register for this seminar please contact the Achimota Centre directly at (705) 735-2336 or via email at cindyd@achimota.ca
