SUMMER SOCIAL SKILLS PROGRAM RUNS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 03, 2010

MONDAYS, TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS FROM 12:30 PM TO 4:30 PM

Summer 2010 – Social Skills Program - The Achimota Centre is proud to offer a Summer Social Skills Program.  It is is a fun, safe and inclusive environment based on the principals of Applied Behavioural Analysis; small ratios with opportunities for social and cooperative interactions facilitated by our trained staff.  The planned activities allow the children to be involved in a variety of social interactions with other children while working on such skills as turn taking, sharing, friendship, following directions, emotions and feelings.  Our Social Skills Program offers opportunities to develop appropriate life skills. 

Our program will work on new skills and help maintain current skills over the summer!

Achimota will be holding our 2nd Annual “Friends that Care” Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 12:30 pm!  The Tournament will take place at Bear Creek Golf Course.  Bear Creek offers a challenging game of golf and an escape to some of the most picturesque countryside in Central Ontario.  Come discover why Ontario Golf Magazine rated Bear Creek Golf Club one of Ontario’s Hidden GemsPrizes included for Speciality Holes, Top Foursome and More!

ACHIMOTA’S CONSULTING OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST TO PRESENT ON JUNE 24/10

Occupational Therapist Shirley Sutton in one of the three Speakers presenting at Georgian College on June 24, 2010.  The other speakers include Dr. Peter Szatmari and Dr. Temple Grandin.  Shirley Sutton is a well known therapist that has worked with children and teens with special needs for over 25 years.  Along with her private practice in Collingwood, Shirley works with many local agencies.  She is also the consulting Occupational Therapist at the Achimota Centre for Children with Autism.  Shirley is a known presenter across Canada and is also known for her co-authorship of the book, Building Bridges through Sensory Intergration (OT for Children with Autism & Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders by Yack, Sutton and Aquilla 1998) and Learn to Print & Draw A Visual – Kinesthetic Program by Wahl and Sutton.  Shirley also contributed to Kevin Stoddart’s 2005 book, Children, Youth and Adults with Aspergers Syndrome (JKP Publisher).

ACHIMOTA CENTRE – BARRIE COLTS FUNDRAISER!   BARRIE VS OSHAWA

If you love hockey then you will want to purchase tickets and help support a local charity!   $7.00 per ticket will go to the Achimota Centre.  The goal of the program is to provide the Centre an opportunity to raise funds and help promote sportsmanship and team spirit!

In order to purchase tickets to support the Achimota Centre, you must complete a ticket order form – please request form via email to cindyd@achimota.ca

 PLEASE NOTE:  $15.75 per ticket ($7.00 per ticket goes to Achimota) - all donations will benefit the Achimota Centre for Children with Autism.  Ticket orders MUST BE SUBMITTED to the Centre no later than February 05, 2010.

COLTS HOCKEY TEAM “IN THE COMMUNITY”

Thank you to the Barrie Colts for visiting the Achimota Centre for Children with Autism.  A very special thanks to the players that took time out of their busy schedules; those players include Stephen Gaskin, Dean Pawlaczyk, Colin Behenna, David Mazurek, and Mitch Bennett!

The Colts Hockey Team is in the community visiting the Achimota Centre on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm!  Drop by the Centre and meet some of the players and get an autograph!

ACHIMOTA CENTRE JOINS CHILDREN’S TREATMENT NETWORK OF SIMCOE YORK (CTN)

The Achimota Centre for Children with Autism is pleased to have become a member of the Children’s Treatment Network of Simcoe York.  The CTN is committed to working together with various agencies to develop a system of service based on the principles of being family centred, holistic and integrated.  CTN is the winner of the 2008 SickKids Foundation Rotman Award in Paediatric Home Care.  To learn more about the CTN visit their website at www.ctn-simcoeyork.ca

ACHIMOTA WELCOMES NEW SENIOR THERAPIST

The Achimota Centre for Children with Autism welcomes new Senior Therapist Anne Miller.  Anne has worked with children with autism for the past seven years and has a BA from Nipissing University.  Along with a Masters of Science in Teaching Childhood Education, Anne is also a member of the Ontario College of Teachers.  She is presently working on her Board Certification in Applied Behavioural Analysis (BCBA) and will be a great addition to the Centre.
